Some projects begin with an answer. This one began with questions.
Who defines art?
Who validates artistic value?
Where does artistic knowledge come from?
Art Beyond the Rules is an ongoing curatorial research project exploring how artistic value is recognised, constructed and experienced.
It began with questions that have long accompanied my own artistic practice. What do we know when we make art, and how do we know it? What happens when artistic knowledge emerges through intuition, perception, lived experience or ways of making that do not necessarily follow established paths?
These questions are now expanding beyond my own practice.
I am interested in the many ways art comes into being: through formal education or self-directed practice, within institutions or independently from them, through inherited knowledge, personal experience and different ways of perceiving and understanding the world.
Rather than placing distinct practices, artists or communities under a single definition, the project asks what we might discover when different ways of making and knowing are allowed to enter into dialogue.
The project is still unfolding.
It will grow through research, encounters and conversations, some planned, others unexpected. Each may open another question, another direction, another possibility.
I do not yet know where they will lead.
Perhaps that is precisely how this project needs to grow: through curiosity, listening and exchange rather than predetermined conclusions.
This page will follow that process, leaving a thread of the questions, ideas and encounters that gradually shape Art Beyond the Rules.
The conversation has begun.
